Since July, 2014, Michael Stone has been the Assistant General Counsel of BRE Hotels and Resorts, a Blackstone Real Estate Advisors portfolio company, where he oversees the day to day legal operations of the hotel portfolio, including all telecom leasing matters. BRE Hotels and Resorts consists of 190 select services hotels and 20 full service resorts located throughout the U.S. and Caribbean.
Between September 2009 and June 2014, Mr. Stone held the titles of Senior Counsel and Corporate Counsel at American Tower Corporation and Global Tower Partners (“GTP”) respectively. At the time of American Tower’s Acquisition of GTP in October of 2013, GTP was the largest privately owned tower operator in the U.S. and the fourth largest independent operator in this sector. GTP owned, managed, or held master leases for more than 15,000 wireless sites and over 40,000 miles of railroad rights of way throughout the U.S. During his tenure at GTP, Mr. Stone oversaw the negotiation and preparation of all ground leases, individual tenant leases, national master lease agreements with the major wireless telecommunications carriers, tower and building management agreements, and easements for the development of wireless communications facilities.
Prior to American Tower and Global Tower Partners, Mr. Stone was the Assistant General Counsel at LXR Luxury Resorts, a Blackstone Real Estate portfolio company, where he successfully oversaw the negotiation, contracting, and managing of over $1 billion in capital expenditure projects. The LXR Luxury Resorts portfolio consisted of 40 resorts and hotels located throughout the U.S. and Caribbean.
Prior to LXR Luxury Resorts, Mr. Stone served as an associate in the litigation and commercial law departments of the firm of Lydecker Diaz in Miami, Florida and as an Assistant State Attorney for the State Attorney’s Office for the 20th Judicial Circuit. He received his B.S. in Environmental Science from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama and earned his J.D. from Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama.
